「跨領域」近年來已成為重要趨勢。當真實世界的問題無法僅依靠單一學門解決, 跨領域學習的必要性便大幅提升。

目前尚無唯一且固定的定義,但國外學者提出以下觀點:
There is no universally fixed definition, but scholars have proposed the following interpretations:

  1. Jacobs (1989) 認為跨領域是一種課程取向與知識觀,透過多元學門的方法與溝通形式來探討議題與問題。
    Jacobs (1989) describes interdisciplinary learning as a curriculum approach that applies communication and methodologies from multiple fields.

  2. Ivanitskaya (2002) 主張跨領域是「兩種以上的領域彼此互動並相互影響的過程」。
    Ivanitskaya (2002) defines it as a process in which two or more disciplines interact and influence each other.

  3. Stokols (2003) 認為跨領域是來自不同背景的研究者共同解決問題的歷程。
    Stokols (2003) describes it as a collaborative process among researchers from different fields solving shared problems.

綜合以上定義,跨領域學習的核心在於:
