目前尚無唯一且固定的定義，但國外學者提出以下觀點：

  1. Jacobs (1989) 認為跨領域是一種課程取向與知識觀，透過多元學門的方法與溝通形式來探討議題與問題。

  2. Ivanitskaya (2002) 主張跨領域是「兩種以上的領域彼此互動並相互影響的過程」。
