 Undergraduate Dual Degree Program of FinTech

  • This program was established to face the trends of  FinTech due to financial liberalization, globalization, and information, as well as to meet the demands by domestic industries and financial development for business and financial management personnel. Course instruction in this Department not only focuses on lectures on the professional knowledge of banking insurance, securities and corporate financial management, but also helps students work as interns in new information techngology management. It is hoped that academic theories and practical works can be used to affirm each other, and students can shorten their learning process after graduation at the beginning of their careers.
  • International degree and/or non-degree students who are not native speaker in English must demonstrate language proficiency in order to choose the following programs conducted in English. The minimum requirement is to reach the level of CEFR B1, which is equivalent to TOEFL iBT 61, TOEFL PBT 500, IELTS 5.5, or TOEIC 650.

金融科技概論與實作 Introduction to Financial Technology and Implementation

This is the fundamental course of financial technology program. The purpose is to teach the basic skill of Computers and Programming and help students to learn the advanced courses. After learning this course, students are able to obtain the basic skill of programming and the concept of financial information. This course contains several modules, including introduction to computer science and programming, overview of financial programming language, data storage, data manipulation, algorithms and trading, artificial intelligence and database systems.

金融資料庫管理與應用

Financial Database Management and Application

The purpose of this course is to teach the basic skill of database management and application of financial field. After learning this course, students will obtain the basic skill of database management and financial application. This course will induce students’ interest of financial technology and application context including: introduction to database environment, cost and risk of database technology, components of database environment, development of financial database, physical design and module of property and so on.

Financial Big Data Analytics

 

The course is designed to enable students to (1) comprehend the definitions of financial big data, so as to establish their capabilities of access big data, collection of financial data, cleaning and summarizing data via using R or Python and their package, (2) effectively analyze the optimization methods of financial information, as well as deliver and communicate the processes and the outcomes of business operations, to further assist practitioners in the improvement of operating performance. After the learning, it will Allow students to (1) possess the basic skill of financial big data, (2) have the capability of analysis of financial big data, and (3) have the preliminary skill of analyzing financial information, and (4) be familiar with some fundamental financial software packages.

This course exposes students to the basic knowledge and practical skills in the financial information system. The topics include financial calculation, financial trading system (microstructure), application of investment, financial planning system and managerial decision making, strategic management, financial system design, managing change and innovation.

Financial Innovation

This course is designed to be familiar with fundamentals of financial derivatives and structured products covering forwards, futures, swaps, and options. Students will have good knowledge of how these products work, how they are used, how they are priced, and how financial institutions hedge their risks when they trade the products. It is required for students to write simple programs to price these financial derivatives. Students are well prepared for advanced studies after this course.

Investment Analytics and Technology Application

This course will develop the students’ capability to obtain in advanced understanding the investment analytics and their technology application. The course contains several modules, including introduction to financial market, portfolio management, simulation of security trading, smart investment strategy, technology application on mutual fund futures and options management and financial network management. The course draws heavily on current literature in investment management, economics, and information technology application .

This course illustrates the capstone learning in sorting out the issues facing of financial technology, assessing alternatives, and illuminating the effects of any particular choice. The financial technology should be the focus of stakeholders’ concern and it helps managers understand the impact of the firm on the world around it.

Investments

This course starts with an introduction to the investment environment and financial instruments. It then leads to the basic utility theory under uncertainty and the discussions on how to make optimal decision under uncertainty. It will focus on the concepts of risk and return, diversification, asset allocation, efficient markets, market anomalies and behavioral finance. Upon the completion of this course, students will understand market trading structures, equity, fixed income, and derivative securities, portfolio performance strategies and evaluation methods. Students will also know how to apply these theories to the analysis of optimal investment decisions in the financial market.

Financial Institutions Management

Financial Institutions and Management one-semester course, designed to help students to be familiar with variety of financial institutions and risks of financial institutions. Some specific goals which will be addressed during the academic half-year are listed below: Understanding: Students will encounter to detailed look at why financial institutions are special, what is new in each of the different sectors of the financial institutions industry and learn basic concepts of risks of financial institutions. Specific risks include interest rate risk, market risk, credit risk, off-balance-sheet risk, foreign exchange risk and liquidity risk. Strategies such as listening for examples and time periods, previewing, taking notes, getting main idea, etc. will be taught. Brainstorm: Students will frequently have opportunities to engage in discussion on topics related to how to manage risks of financial institutions and how to carry on a case study, narrate an event, participate in group discussions, and give a group presentation will be covered. Solution: Students will gain experience implementing their own ideas through organizing their ideas in forms such as problem-solution approaches or narrative accounts. Useful skills such as analyzing, paraphrasing, and effective summarizing will also be covered. In this course, students can learn how to measure and manage the following risk components of financial institution by using the FDIC's raw data and complete their final paper. 1.Interest Rate Risk 2.Credit Risk 3.Market Risk 4.Operational Risk

This course is designed to provide students comprehensive understandings in advanced theories regarding market efficiency, anomalies and investors' behavior.  To understand topics regarding: market efficiency, anomalies, event studies, overreaction, momentum, prospect theory, framing, mental accounting, status quo bias, overconfidence, anchoring. To provide learning interests through: lecture, literature collection/review, group sharing/report...etc.

Financial Research Method

This course aims to introduce the advanced financial research method and programming of R, Eviews and Stata. Case studies and assignment are also used in this course. This course is designed in particular to cultivate students’ skill of financial theory and application.

國際財務管理

International Financial Management

The basic goal of this course is to introduce international financial markets, and to study the economics behind decision-making about investment in the international context. The topics of interest start with discussing major investment vehicles, the instruments, the markets, as well as the concepts and the techniques used to analyze those investments are then reviewed. Following the introduction, the important notion of arbitrage would be given and emphasized throughout the course. Related to the notion is the various parity, describing equilibrium relationship among international goods, money and capital markets. The determination of exchange rates is another focal point.

Investment Portfolio Analysis

Portfolio analysis is the process of looking at every investment held within a portfolio and evaluating how it affects the overall performance. Portfolio analysis seeks to determine the variance of each security, the overall beta of the portfolio, the amount of diversification and the asset allocation within the portfolio. Modern portfolio theory widely used in practice in the financial industry and several of its creators won a Nobel memorial prize for the theory. It is possible to hedge against systemic risk, but it cannot be fully mitigated without giving up a significant portion of the potential returns. Asset allocation is the second part of reducing risk. By allocating funds among different asset classes, the investor is going to experience less volatility caused by the varying performance of the investments in each class.

金融套裝軟體應用 Application of Financial Software Package

This course requires students to build basic knowledge about the following subjects about how to apply chart, table, and statistics for business through Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, how to analyze the data in spreadsheets, and how to apply analyzed results of spreadsheets for report. Other tools in financial application will also be introduced like collaboration with track changes, functions, audit formulas and queries, chart editing and pivot tables, and macros and VBA application.

Topics in Financial Institution and Management

This course will review all major types of financial institutions, their specific features and activities. The course focuses on nature, sources, measurement and management tools for different types of risks such as interest rates, market, liquidity, capital, foreign exchange, etc. The course will also provide students with an opportunity to develop their understanding of contemporary procedures utilized in risk management of financial institutions, different types of traditional risk management techniques and new ways to manage risks.  At the end of the course, students should be able to do the following: 1. Understand banks’ financial statements for risk management; 2. Differentiate and identify major types of risks faced by Financial Institutions; 3. Understand the nature, measurements of credit risk; 4. Understand the structure and functions of capital for FIs.
